Maria Gadu will be onstage at 8pm.

One of the artists at the forefront of Música Popular Brasileira, Maria Gadú performs her new album Guéla with her live band.

While Gadú’s emotionally-driven acoustic-based songs fit comfortably alongside indie-pop singer-songwriters, her raw, passionate vocals and accomplished guitar style are notably Brazilian. Taking the Tropicalia of her parents’ generation and fusing it with the sounds of hers, her songs conjure the streets of her São Paulo hometown – the rootsy acoustic sounds of the underground music scene with hints of vibrant Samba and Afro Beat.

Playing in bars since the age of thirteen Gadú honed her song writing, developing a unique voice. She was signed to Brazil’s Slap Records label after being spotted by Caetano Veloso with whom she did her first national tour, starting the momentum which saw her become one of the most recognisable young names in new Brazilian music.

‘Maria Gadú is a popular phenomenon for her own generation and someone with an authentic musical vocation. The first time I saw her I was dazzled and when she started singing it was spectacular.’ Caetano Veloso
