UK debut. Steeped in Latin traditions, French-Colombian bassist Ëda Diaz has been exploring and refining her rich dual musical heritage. Her music poetically mixes traditional Latin American sounds with experimental pop influences and industrial electronica.

Bridging Paris and Medellín, her first album Suave Bruta, co-produced with Anthony Winzenrieth in 2023, wove haute-couture pop with Afro-Colombian rhythms such as bambuco viejo or vallenato, her double bass as the insistent pulse. The album reconciles different parts of her identity, two rich and complementary aspects that she has long viewed as opposites. Wonky Colombian salsa, electrified currulao and an eccentric Colombian-made dembow all sparkle, evoking Björk, James Blake or Juana Molina.

It was during a jazz course at the Nadia and Lili Boulanger Conservatory in Paris that she swapped her piano for the double bass, connecting two cultures: jazz and popular Latin music. It was in 2017, when she met Winzenrieth (Aurus, 3Somesisters…), that she found her style. She released her first EP in 2017, co-produced by Anthony, and established herself within the family of new Latin pop. During a Latin American tour in 2019, she performed in Mexico for the Roxy Fest before representing the “Women of the World” section at the Havana World Music Festival alongside the children of Chucho Valdés.

In quick succession in the 2020s she joined Ladaniva, shared a KEXP session with La Dame Blanche, recorded the backing vocals for Voyou’s next album (alongside Pijama , November Ultra and Laura Etchegohyen), charmed the MaMA Festival and opened several La Chica concerts.

‘Diaz’s wistful jazz vocal creates a refreshing contrast with her often raw-edged production style, producing highlights like the frenetic Tiemblas.’ The Guardian
