Following their sold out UK debut at Rich Mix in January, Bixiga 70 make a swift return to London with a ground-breaking fusion of African and South American rhythms and sounds.

This is what you missed last time:

‘Seeing the ten-piece live is another experience entirely: the rolling grooves from the percussionists and the giant blasts from the brass are electrifying as the band shift through a thumping, ever-changing set that nods its head to each of the band’s touchstones along the way.’ Huck magazine

‘A night to remember … Although the ensemble performed almost two hours’ worth of fifteen songs plus two encores, the Rich Mix crowd craved more and left the venue only when the lights eventually faded out … Bixiga 70 showed what it is to be a collective. The band is a gathering of remarkable soloists working perfectly together. Once on stage the sounds of their instruments met, melded, broke off, distanced themselves and finally came back together to create a harmony of melodic lines and rhythms.’ Rhythm Passport

The São Paulo based ten-piece combo are one of the guiding voices of Brazil’s contemporary instrumental music scene. Taking Fela Kuti’s Afrika 70 band as a launchpad both in name and spirit, Bixiga 70 is a breathtaking rhythmic storm where inspired solos, harmony and dynamics, beats and improvisation all mesh together in vital and unpredictable ways.

The group’s first two records in 2011 and 2013 hit many ‘best of’ lists in Brazil. Their third album released last September on label Glitterbeat pushed them to a new level.

‘Afrobeat meets Brazilian flair and leaves the listener gasping in admiration.’ Music News

‘So damned life-affirmingly funky it could probably raise the dead.’ **** R2

‘It’s hard not to be blown away by the sheer tenacity of São Paulo-based ten-piece Bixiga 70.’ Stamp the Wax
