Following his sold out show at the Barbican with Fatoumata Diawara two years ago, pianist and band leader Roberto Fonseca returns with his first new studio album in four years, ABUC. In a new dawn, in a post Buena Vista world in Havana, Fonseca takes his music in new directions.

After recent years leading his quartet, in his inventive new project Fonseca has beefed up his brass to create a contemporary review of the essentials of Cuban music. Not since Cachaito Lopez ground-breaking album in 2001 have the Cuban basics been made to sound so fresh as in Fonseca’s Electro Cha, Son Beat and Mambo Afro.

Exhilarating and life affirming, Fonseca is arguably the most inventive and creative of the younger generation of new Latin jazz musicians. His new album, out in the autumn, will consolidate and reinforce his position.

Support comes from Ariwo, combining the raw energy of Cuban rumba with the deep melancholy of Iranian electronic music. A Cuban/Iranian quartet, they focus on the unexplored intersection between electronica and Afro-Cuban folkloric music. Ariwo comprises Iranian electronic composer, Pouya Ehsaei (Entr’acte), and three of London’s most influential Cuban musicians: Oreste Noda (Sambroso Sambroso), Yelfris Valdes (Sierra Maestra) and Latin Grammy winner, Hammadi Valdes (Carlos Acosta / Irakere).
