Omara Portuondo is the First Lady of the Buena Vista Social Club and has long been one of Cuba’s most celebrated female voices. In a career that stretches back to the early fifties she has thrilled audiences around the world with her range and the passionate and moving honesty of her voice.
“Portuondo has a smoky, melancholic charisma that fully justifies her description as Cuba’s Edith Piaf.” Uncut
“A velvety voice and a passion that has moved audiences the world over.” Time Out
Tonight’s special event celebrates Omara’s 60 years in the music business, and the release of her new album Gracias, with an intimate performance backed by a fine quintet allowing Omara to display her vocal talents to the full.
Omara’s band includes musical director and guitarist Swami Jr., and two of Cuba’s up and coming young stars pianist Harold López Nussa and drummer Rodney Barretto.
Many years have gone by since Omara first achieved fame in Cuba as a member of Las d’Aida, and yet the singer still continues to live up to the name she was making for herself then. Despite her age, she has an extraordinary, natural ability to enchant audiences simply by sharing the music that has been flowing through her veins for six decades.
